Substance Abuse Issues

Substance abuse can be defined as long-term, use of alcohol or drugs that significantly interferes with daily life, relationships, employment, finances physical health and mental stability. While some people seem to be able to walk away from addictive substances, others do not have that ability. Once addiction sets in, walking away is not an option without professional help. At Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab, we have vast experience in helping addicts walk away from their addictions. There are a number of illegal and illicit drugs as well as a myriad of prescription drugs of abuse. Listed here are the most common drugs, most of which are highly addicting.
Some of the more common “party” or “club drugs” are as follows: Ecstasy or Molly, LSD or Acid, Psilocybin or Shrooms, Marijuana or Weed, Spice (synthetic marijuana), and Adderall (amphetamines). While these substances do not appear to have serious consequences to the casual user, they are often used to excess and in potentially deadly combination with other, more dangerous drugs which has led to death.
- Cocaine is a stimulant. The high does not last very long, and so those who use Cocaine have to take the drug many times to maintain the high. Cocaine is highly addicting and can have serious withdrawal effects.
- Heroin is an opiate drug and is derived from opium, which is the pure form taken from the Opium Poppy. It produces a euphoria when used, and addicts often feel energized, relaxed and carefree. After the initial euphoria a sleepiness sets in and users tend to “nod off” in an opiate dream like state.
- Opiate drugs are prescription pain killers and can be morphine based or synthetic based. They are highly addicting and when misused (snorting or injecting) produce a similar effect as heroin at high doses. These pain pills include: hydrocodone (Lortabs, Norcos), oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet, Roxycontin), morphine, fentanyl, and codeine. In this country more people now die from painkiller overdoses than from heroin and cocaine combined. A fairly new “party” drug is Promethazine with Codeine cough syrup mixed with soda-pop known as “Purple Drank” or “Sizzurp”.
- Sleeping pills, such as Ambien are also being misused. If taken in high amounts they produce a waking dream-like state where users hallucinate and have no memory of what they are doing.
- Anti-anxiety drugs, or Benzodiazepines are prescribed for anxiety and taken in high amounts cause the user to feel intoxicated, similar to alcohol. Mixed with an opiate or alcohol, these drugs can be deadly. These drugs are also highly addicting and can be life threatening to withdraw from, requiring medical intervention.
- Methamphetamine is an amphetamine type drug either misused as a prescription (although it is rare that pharmaceutical methamphetamine is prescribed in this country) or made in clandestine labs. It is smoked, snorted or injected. Similar to cocaine in the duration of the high, users take meth frequently to maintain that high.
- And while Nicotine (Cigarettes, Vaping, chewing tobacco) is not a drug that typically produces a high, it is a highly addictive drug and has been described as harder to withdraw from than heroin as far as cravings go.
- Inhalants (Air Duster) are extremely dangerous substances found in common aerosol household products that have had deadly consequences. The aerosol can freeze the user’s lungs causing instant death. It is inhaled and produces a very short hallucinatory high.
