Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab intake specialists use American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria and placement guidelines in determining not only length of stay, but also what level of treatment to place you on, such as Residential versus Intensive or General Outpatient. Not everyone needs residential and in fact, to place someone in residential who will lose their job and place their family in a financial hardship situation would be counter-productive. Below are the three most common placement levels and what they mean.
ASAM 1.0: Called Outpatient Services (General Outpatient or GOP), this level of care is usually for those transitioning from Intensive Outpatient or for those who don’t need the intensity or number of support services. In this level of care, we would see patients who are well established in a 12 Step support group, or working or attending school full time, and handling their responsibilities. They would typically be checking in with the group, processing how they have handled stress or triggers and are usually fairly stable.
ASAM 2.1: Called Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services, this level of care is generally for those transitioning out of a residential setting and close to being discharged from residential, or for those whose substance use would usually warrant a residential placement but either because of financial, personal, or employment issues, they are unable to be in an inpatient setting. Patients need the intensity and security of the group far more frequently that someone on GOP. They are needing support and education surrounding skills to manage triggers, stress and life in general. They need much more than a GOP group could provide. Those in IOP will often also be involved in individual therapy as well as intensive case management.
ASAM 3.5: Residential or Inpatient treatment: Patients assessed to this level of care are in need of immediate, supervised treatment. They need the safety and security of an inpatient setting to keep them safe and stable. They are unable to stop using drugs or alcohol and may be presenting a danger to themselves or others. Co-existing mental health issues may be present and interfering with their ability to function at home. Loved ones are concerned enough to have an intervention, and at this stage, the patient is in desperate need of usually detox and inpatient. There may be medical issues due to being chronically addicted that need immediate attention, as well as detox medications needed.
Addiction and subsequent recovery can be frightening. At Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab we understand that you are being asked to change your life. To change your friends, maybe letting go of family members who are using too, and possibly even changing where you live. We are here to provide you with the best possible assessment and treatment to meet your needs, not ours! We are not interested in placing you in residential to get more money from the insurance companies. We care about saving your life. We want you to return to your community, family, and friends whole, healthy and happy.
