Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab
Family Therapy

Picture
Family therapy is such a crucial part of the addict's healing process for a number of reasons. One of the most important reasons is because the fruit does not fall very far from the tree. This means that the addicted client is and must not be blamed as the only one with the issues at hand. Chances are the addict picked up some dysfunctional habits and behaviors from his/her parents completely unaware of the situation.

If only the addict addresses their personal issues and the family is left alone, chances are the addict will resort back to old patterns and end up in relapse mode due to the family's tendency for homeostasis. Homeostasis meaning to create a balance in the family system.

This happens more frequently when an individual within the family system stops acting or playing the role one has grown accustomed to or been thrown into. Strangely enough, this natural occurrence of being ostracized happens when the addict is starting to display healthy behaviors contrary to how the family feels one should act or behave. The easiest way to think of it is like this. Imagine a culture and how they sing or dance. Very different depending on which continent you are visiting. If you go to another country and start to sing and dance the way you are used to and it is different from how they are used to doing things, it causes strange looks and downright awkwardness. This example is truly no different from when the addict goes to a alcohol or drug treatment center in Utah and returns home playing a different style of music and no one else gets it. This in all actuality is very dangerous if the family is not accustomed to a new way of dancing, which normally takes consistent and intensive treatment sessions for all of the family members that have a direct influence and regular interaction with the client.

On a different note, the addict has picked up many poor habits and behaviors (songs and dances) as a means for survival which tend to bulldoze over the family's feelings or personal property. This is not the family's fault and they should not take it personal. However, if the family does not learn how to address their enabling behaviors and co-dependency, they could accidentally push their addicted loved one closer to their grave then necessary. During family treatment, many issues are addressed including the shame based system, communication and setting and holding firm boundaries. This is usually conducted on a weekly basis and can be administered in a large group room setting as well as in a private consultation. They usually last anywhere from one hour to four hours depending on the severity of the situation or if a family member is visiting from out of state.
