Utah is home to many wonderful and breathtaking mountains and valleys. In fact, there are many foothills to explore throughout the state alone. It would be a shame to not use such an awesome commodity in our own backyard! Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab believes in the healing power of mother nature and uses her gifts any opportunity possible! We are within 20 miles of two canyons, which include three acclaimed hiking caves, breathtaking waterfalls, rivers and “Swimming holes”. Not to mention biking trails, horseback riding trails, and beautiful canyon hiking trails. In the winter, Utah is home to several premier skiing and snowboarding resorts as well.
There are a number of research studies showing that exercise and playing are important components to overcoming addictions. For too long the addict has neglected their health, which then impacts not only their bodies but the spirit as well. Exercise can be any kind of physical activity such as walking, running, hiking, swimming, sports etc. And while there are numerous reasons researchers have found to incorporate some kind of exercise into substance abuse treatment these are the top three reasons that most researchers agree make some kind of exercise a “must have” for inpatient treatment of substance abuse:
1. Exercise relieves and reduces stress. We often hold negative emotions within our bodies. Exercising the muscles allows the release of negative emotions you may be keeping in. Exercise uses both physical and emotional energy, that without an outlet, destructive means of coping with stress occur.
2. Exercise heals the brain. When you exercise, endorphins, which creates a feeling of well-being increase in the brain. Abusing drugs and alcohol, depletes the natural endorphins in your brain which leads to dissatisfaction, unhappiness and has been described as constantly feeling “blah”. Exercise will help build up normal levels of endorphins and dopamine in your brain.
3. During any kind of exercise, people are concentrating on their bodies and focusing on the sound of breath moving in and out, the blood pumping past their ear, the muscles reaching for a new level. This leads to a new self-awareness and a sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment.
Play can be an important source of relaxation as well. The benefits of play could not all be listed on this page! There is something transforming when an adult can let go of inhibitions and social constructs and simply play like a child! Coloring, swinging, skipping, jump rope: all games of our past and so needed in our present. We may have forgotten the magic of ALMOST going over the top of the swing set; or at least thinking you could. Leaning as far back as we could on the slide to go even faster! As a child playing, you made connections to new concepts more easily. Bonds were formed immediately without all the over thinking that adults do. Playing can keep you young and healthy. It can sharpen your mind, and relieve your stress. Playing is a ritual, a rite of passage that adults need to incorporate back into their worlds. At Eagle Mountain Drug Rehab, we acknowledge and honor the child within and encourage our patients to play when possible!
Our highly trained recreational programs will ensure a safe, healthy fun alternative to intoxication. Patients have often forgotten how to have simple fun without introducing a chemical into the activity. We strive to re-connect our patients with the ability to play, laugh and remember how to be childlike and free. Some have not laughed in so long they don’t remember what it’s like. Our staff become the patients “play mentor” in a sense. **(Pictures below are not of actual clientele)**
